It depends on what your beer is for really.
If I'm having a good meal, I like to compliment it with a nice tasting, rich, full beer. One with a lot of flavor and one that is usually more amber or red/brown. Usually I'll only have one beer on these occasions. Something like a Fat Tire, Guinness, or Newcastle.
However, if I'm having beers with my buddies or at the game or something like that, I want a lighter beer that's easier to drink and one that I can drink several of without feeling full. That's when the Bud Light, Coors, or even PBR comes out.
People ask me what my favorite beer is, and I usually answer "cold", or "free".
