1) hard question to answer. If you have the image to try with SSF then try it with MESS and see the results for yourself

2)No need to mount anything in any virtual drive.
If using QMC2 have the system selected and pick the devices/file chooser tab which then allows you to point it to an image.

An example or command line (adjust your paths and image name as necessary)
