there was no smell, he was just profiling my friend because he looked like a hoodlum (he does, very much so) and also somehow thought he was part of a gang of troublesome yutes that was rolling through at the same time. i don't know how to explain it, but he just looks like the sorta dude that would have three guns and a pound of cocaine on him. cops run with instinct and first impressions. they sort of have to, really.
