I would probably steer him mostly toward iPad games, if he has one. Touch interfaces tend to be simpler and more intuitive, and the games tend more toward the casual than other platforms.
Assuming he's not going to be interested in twitch games or anything overly cutesy, I'd suggest:
Fairway Solitaire - golf themed solitaire. Presentation is a little goofy, but there are enough twists on basic solitaire to make it interesting.
Words With Friends - As long as he can find people to play with
W.E.L.D.E.R. - Another Scrabble-ish game, but this one is single player and pretty addicting.
The Heist - Puzzle games (some of them challenging) dressed up with a crime caper storyline.
Tetris - Who doesn't love Tetris?
