That is the one and only pro. That's why e.g. all the devs run split sets, and it's what the popular rom download sites do the most traffic in.

MAME itself works with 7zip merged sets. Front-end support varies, check with the front end author.

As far as runtime speed, split/merge is basically a wash with .zip, but merged has the potential to be a lot slower with very large 7zip sets (e.g. NeoGeo or CPS-2 games with a lot of clones).

Split/merge is also a wash here for .zip, and both ways will be slower for 7zip.
