Let me play devil's advocate for a moment. If you solicit donations for this, what does that teach you? That responsibility is for chumps and real men fall back on the community to compensate for their cavalier attitude? It definitely won't do anything to encourage you to back up your data next time - just get some chumps to pay for it again. I had a lot more sympathy for the guy begging after his wife walked out on him, even though admittedly we only had one side of the story in that case and he could've been a total arsehole to her and brought it on himself for all we know.
