It's apparently impossible for anyone to estimate bandwidth demand. These guys can't do it, EA can't do it, everyone seems to get clobbered. I should start a consulting business where companies like this show me their plans, and I tell them "You guys are going to be a smoking crater 90 seconds after you launch."
While the promotion was still going on, the iOS app seemed to fare a little better. The catalog seemed to be on a separate server from the actual downloads, so I was able to browse and "buy" free comics without actually downloading them. Now that they're in my account, I assume I'll be able to go back and pull them down at my leisure, once they clear up the puddle of molten slag where their servers used to be.
I tried to only get stuff I was actually interested in, but I still ended up with something like 90 comic books. The app interface seems pretty cool. It shows one panel at a time, instead of a whole page (at least on the iPhone). If a panel is too big to comfortably fit on the screen, it'll show one part and then slide down to the other part when you hit "next". Plus you can manually zoom and scroll around if you want.
