that is not a problem in MESS, the xml is invalid: try extracting akumajo.xml from the archive and use any online validator (like http://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_validator.asp) to check by yourself
you shall report the broken xml to Pugsy, because the issue in in the xml (namely, he uses dashes '--' inside a comment which is invalid in xml...)
also, if this happens in MESS and not UME, you are probably not enabling the correct cheatpath in UME, because that same akumajo.xml would fail to load in any MAME derivative ![](//www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
using cheats quite often I can just repeat once again: cheat support in MESS is as good as in MAME, these days, as long as you use softlists
