I wish they were as profitable today. I've run through the numbers several times, and they just don't meet a decent margin unless everything is perfect (location/foot traffic, rent, licensing, etc.)
The biggest kick are the archaic licensing fees still on the books. My town is on the cheap side, and it's a local tag fee of $77 a year, state fee of $30. That's $5 grand a year just for the stickers in an arcade of 50 games. ($14 a day, right off the top)
I think I had the money at $10K a month to operate at a break-even with taking a pretty light salary. I'm not sure how these other guys do it with the traffic I've seen.
