How do you organize your media collection - 2012 edition
11/22/12 02:21 AM

I'm still chasing the holy grail: a website that allows me to catalog my entire collection of books, music, movies, video games, software - and optionally e-books, apps, streaming video purchases, etc. With a full-on recommendation engine that's smart and rich enough with data to think "if he likes this movie, and these CDs, he might like this book - from an entirely different franchise".

It's just not out there.

Amazon comes closest - with tons of data, purchase history, wish lists, etcetera - but they've stripped the physical collection management features pretty much clean out, with only an "I Own It" checkbox to indicate whether you actually own something. There's a recommendation engine, but it plays it safe SO much. "You like this episode of Doctor Who? Then you'll like this other episode!" without considering books, audio books, etc. really much.

What do you use these days - any new apps/websites I should be looking at? I'm considering signing up for GoodReads or Librarything or one of those - but still, it's just books. Is a per-category website solution good? GoodReads for books, something else for music, another for videogames, etc.?

I'm also trying to move to the cloud, but my physical collection is still huge: additionally for sentimental reasons some things aren't being parted with.

Anyhow, chime in from out there in Interwebs.
