Had to re grade the last of my back yard. I was trying to get grass present for a party the following weekend. Sod hasn't been available for weeks due to the heat, had no choice but to plant. I needed the grass to grow quick, so I went shopping for options.
I saw these recycled paper "grass mats". They roll out on top of the area you are planting grass, and are supposed to help grass grow by keeping the seeds moist. I figured they weren't too expensive and worth a shot. Just for curiosities sake I wanted to see what the results would be with and without the mats.
I laid down a thin coat of compost manure and peat moss across the entire area to be planted. I threw down fresh seed, generic label (traditionally I use Scott's water-smart, but this was a large area and that stuff is pricey). I rolled out the mats right over the seed. In the area where I did not lay down a mat, I lightly raked the seed under the dirt.
The results below are after SEVEN days. It was 90F+ each of the seven days. I watered every other day.
