As I commonly say, "SDLMAME is proudly developed on Fedora". And yes, I use KDE - if you think the implementation in F17 is rough, it was far, far worse on older RH/Fedora versions.
I don't have any particular opinions of SuSE one way or the other - I haven't tried it since about 1998, and people using it haven't done anything to show up on my radar MAME-wise
