Pre-arranged control pad mappings for MAME?
07/13/12 04:44 PM

Long exposure to MAME tends to inspire ideas for reducing the volume of time wasted doing things besides playing the games. For example: It takes a long time to set up cheats (assuming one wants to use them), but as luck would have it, somebody maintains a database of cheats for anyone to download. Lots of time is saved.

Know what else takes a good chunk of time? Setting up MAME to work with control pads.. effectively on a per-game basis. Yes, one can set up universal controls and pray, but the reality is that something like one in four games will still require some tinkering with menus before gaming can commence.

I find it easy to anticipate that somebody uses the same control scheme I use (a couple of DualShock2s, or maybe DualShock3s) and has mapped the bulk of MAME's games to something sensibly functional with said pads. This data is saved somewhere - I don't know where. But if said data were to be made available for grabs, I expect a lot of people would be grateful.

Anyone happen to know where I might try looking?

On the same theme of time-saving ideas, here's one I've had for ten years: A database of default save states which puts the user past the bootup sequences of every game. Would save time, and in some cases (Williams games, and other games that require manual fiddling to even get past boot) a lot of pain.
