They know what they're going to get. They have all those pre-sold copies. They "stress test" for 1000 people when they know damn well they'll get 1000 more per second, every second. They require that you log in to play, and hype the launch second to make sure everyone buys the game before they see it working, and tries to play as soon as it launches.
If the thing had an offline mode AT ALL, maybe they could get by with those servers for a while. It hasn't. They wanted you to be frustrated and unable to play, as long as you've already bought in.
