Indeed the names shouldn't go anywhere. MAME is the name to keep (for everything). I know people that don't go far from clicking "start" on their Windows that do know MAME. (btw none of them knows MESS - which is a pity)

No it is not like misfitMAME. UME plain and simple, is a single exe for MAME and MESS with AFAIK the same compile flags as the two separate official compiles. Why you present it as something else?
MESSUNI could possibly be identified as some kind of misfitMAME, as it is a very specific build.
