The phrase used by people who want to be accurate (I've looked several times over the past year or so, since I had seen it mentioned somewhere) is "typically thought of as" or "generally considered" sterile. That's "generally" as in "not always" and "considered" as in "not actually."
It doesn't even matter if it were true for "healthy" individuals, as they'd need to prove to everyone in the district that it was true in this specific case.
Having not read the article, I don't even know if these items were boxed at the time. If they weren't, you've got a fluid in them that will screw up the boards and contacts.
