It seems to me that it's more about torque and traction than inertia. When the wheels hit the ramp, they slip quite a bit at first. When they do grab, they're turning much more slowly as if they car is suddenly starting from a much lower speed, which is what makes it controllable. It also occurs to me that, while it's easy to do in an automatic, doing it in a manual would be much trickier. I would think that you'd have to downshift pretty quick after you hit the ramp, to avoid stalling and make it up.
Imagine getting paid to grabass around in an old Camaro all day. I would almost literally kill for such a job.
