That's wrong. For writable MESS CHDs you now use createhd with the "-c none" parameter.

CHDMAN now doesn't write out sectors that are all zeroes. Thus, uncompressed CHDs are often much smaller than they used to be; this does not indicate they are compressed however, and writing to the CHDs inside MESS will cause them to grow appropriately.
