That's as should be (MESS/MAME) and a big reason to just stay away from all those other console emulators with fiddly bits to them. When you stick a cartridge or disc in your old console, you don't typically have to pop the back (bottom) off it and swap chips until it works with that game; everything is either already there or on the cart/disc. As in real life, so too should be the emulation.
Then again, I don't even have MAME on this system... I haven't had unoccupied free time to want it in.
