I never played the arcade version, but I played the Coleco ADAM version quite a bit. The problem (at least in the Coleco version) is that there's a score multiplier so that the point value of each ship you destroy is multiplied by the level you're on. So if you can manage to survive up to level 20 (I think, don't quote me on it), every enemy ship you kill gives you another extra life. At that point, it's pretty hard to die as long as you shoot something now and then.
