Yeah, when I was about 10 we used to mess around with pipe bombs and stuff too. Times were different back then, parents didn't have 24/7 eyes-on supervision when we were kids.
My friend Thad lit a pipe bomb in a field behind a party store, and just then a cop pulled into the party store. He ran up to try and stomp the wick out, and it blew up on his leg. He "took it like a man" and never ratted the rest of us out, but needless to say, we all learned a lesson even without the parental punishment. That was the last pipe bomb for us... m80's or nothing after that.  Skin graft surgery and recovery later, Thad was fine, and our small town had one less group of pipe-curious boys to worry about.
