Nah, moshing has been around since the late '70s at least. It started at underground punk and hardcore show and moved to the mainstream over the next 10 years. We were moshing at high school band shows in the 'burbs in the early '90s.
Most of the pits I've been in were strangely polite. If you went down, someone was right there pulling you to your feet. The only experience I had that was a little off putting was at a Bosstones show in Worcester. The opening act was a band called Hagfish. We were standing almost halfway back from the stage while opening opening act was on. The pit was down in front, a safe distance away. When Hagfish came on, the place exploded and suddenly we were in the middle of the pit. It wasn't especially violent, just unexpected, and the girls we were with weren't really mosh pit types. We made it out unscathed, but I lists perfectly good Gibson baseball cap that day.
