This is kind-of why I was wondering about the topic. I've been swimming since I was in diapers. There are literally pictures of me in diapers, with water-wings on my arms, jumping off a diving board into 12 feet of water. It's natural for me to just understand the mechanics of it. I don't get how others can't handle it, nor why they would be in or around water if they couldn't.
Closest I've come to being in jeopardy while in water was being left in the middle of a lake in the Ozarks by a Marine uncle. It was part of a 'conditioning test', to see if me and my cousin were able to take his boat out on our own. It was nearly a half-hour swim to shore, and he was watching far enough away to be worried about the situation. I still don't recall ever coming near drowning.
