IMhO, Panic is the main problem here. I can't say I know how to swim, but I tried once in a river, the water level came up to my chest... I went under, kicked my feet, paddled with my hands and I guess I "swam" a short distance, but eventually met the bottom. :-/
And there was one time I was with some friends from my church (back when I was a teenager and knew people I could actually hang out with... kinda). We were at a river/creek, I was walking around in the water. Before I knew it I had gotten into some pretty deep water, it was over my head. When I knew I was going under I took a deep breath. My first thought was to panic... But I stayed calm, noticed my surroundings... Then walked to an area that wasn't as deep, then got out. I didn't want to draw any attention. ![](//www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
My first bad experience with water was when I was 5 or 7'ish. Our family was at a creek, one of my older cousins came up under me while I was in an inner-tube. I went backwards... The next thing I know I'm underwater, all I can see is this cloudy green water... Then a hand reaching for me. I got out, I can't recall how or what happened exactly... Just that I started bawling after that, got out and didn't go back in.
