Ive seen my share of the black friday. Sometimes it is as bad as they make it out on the news. Other times it is ho hum. I remember as a kid doing a kmart one. People *running* to get some doll off a shelf. I have first hand seen people sprint across an open parking lot just to get 10 bucks off some memory sticks.
The camping thing seems to be new. Course in warmer climates it may be more common? But where I grew up you did not hang out unless you liked freezing your nuts off. You showed up an hour or two before opening.
Yesterday I went into a local kmart. Parking lot jam packed, usually quite empty. The people stalking the isles you would think they had just discovered gold krugerrands for a buck each.
I go for the spectical of it. It is amazing to watch two grown adults fight over something as minor as a childs toy. If you want to see that sort of thing go to places like sears/walmart/kmart on a black friday. Best Buy and Kohls not so much...
Also people dont camp out to get a picture frame. They camp out to get the $599 60 inch tv. Of which there will be 1 in the store. "But hey I camped out I a *going* to get something for my trouble *and* it is going to be on sale..." That is the way these people in these lines think.

That is a more extreme example. But I do not doubt it for a second. People can get *ugly* to save 5-10 bucks.
Now it isnt always bad. Sometimes the people in the lines get together and help each other out. "hey I got the toaster for 20 bucks anyone want to trade?" Then everyone switches coupons around and helps each other get things. Usually if a store does coupons before going in the lines are orderly and everyone has fun. If they just queue everyone up and toss the doors open....
