It does seem a bit suspicious. He was planning to marry his girlfriend, but they were "on a break" when the accident and stroke happened. 
That being said, severe brain trauma can cause major personality changes. It doesn't seem like that much of a stretch to say sexual orientation could be affected as well. It would seem to take the wind out of the sails of the "homosexuality is a choice" nonsense.
