If I remember right, the official response was MAME architecture could not emulate non-processor games properly. It was more a special driver simulating the look of the game rather than the original. They were removed by then. Also that happened three or four administration changes ago. Not referring to the team decision change by itself, but rather how long has passed since they took that decision. MAME didn't have discrete sound emulation or an improved artwork system.
