Densha de Go (MAME control input gurus needed. :-))

So the Densha series has two analogue control 'levers' that tick through 5 throttle and 8 brake settings. Mapping to analogue thumbsticks on the XBOX360 doesn't keep the levers at their slots and they return to the center value.

I can't recall another comparable game w/ a similar control method? What are the suggestions for best mapping this?

PS - Apparently there are a variety of specific controllers for this kind of game.
