Yes, allegedly they'd run queries on their own engine, compare to Google results, and then alter their algorithms/index to produce more similar results. Some Googler went on a blogging rampage about that.
Me, I dunno. It's kinda like blackbox reverse-engineering in order to create an emulation 
I still prefer Google for hardcore research. Bing's more for my parents.
That said, if I'm REALLY on the hunt for something, I use any and all available search engines.
