Joke about it sure. Hell, I've joked about it plenty myself. But I've never, EVER talked to anyone who actually wants them married, or even for them to just be gay. The general attitude is, "That's fucking ludicrous. They're best friends. Why can't a couple of guys just be best friends?!"
If anything the "LET B&E GET MARRIED!" thing is a pain in the ass. Acceptance and understanding from straight people who don't have a lot of actual contact with out gays is hard enough to earn. If they think that you're fighting for queer puppet sex on kids show... 
I think it's indeed a mix of anti-gays pushing for it to cause strife AND the freaks pushing for it.
Yes, Virginia, there are some sick fucking freaks in the gay community. As long as the majority of us embrace this "but we're *sniff*, we're all FAMILY" bullshit we'll never have any peace.
There's IS NOTHING WRONG with saying, "We're gay and we want acceptance. What? That guy over there in the leather with the naked dolls? FUCK that guy. Hell no you don't have to accept him, we don't. He's a sick fuck, that one..."
