Yeah, I've noticed that furniture and especially mattresses are second only to cars when it comes to shady practices and dirty little secrets.
I ended up nixing the deal, anyway. I was trying to simulate the angle I would need to bend the mattress to with a tape measure, and it was looking like 90+ degrees to get past the narrowest point. It's probably doable with ratchet straps, but I'd be afraid to damage it. Even worse than not being able to get it upstairs would be to get it up there and end up with a mattress that looks like a taco.
