I've never seen a matress that WASN'T flexible... box springs are another story, but ours (and most) king box springs are two twins.
You'lll like the king.. lots of extra play room.
Yeah, I had a similar problem with our king frame... the headboard wouldn't make the turn up a staircase either, had to cut the legs off... and then ironically moved away, so it never went up stairs anyway :\
