Are we talkin' 'bout gas or charcoal grills? I've never had a gas grill so I cannot comment on them other than I don't like the taste of the food that comes off of them as much as a real charcoal grill. Actually, I've never figured out why someone would cook on a gas grill. Isn't it the same as using the broiler section of your oven? You know the part on the bottom that you always wondered what it is for.

I've never had anything deteriorate on my Weber grill. If you get enough grease and (borrowing from Italie) char, it protects the grill. We usually put it in the garage in the winter. In summer, it stays against the house which is somewhat protected from rain, but not totally.

One tip I have for charcoal grillers...
Get a chimney to start your charcoal. You take one sheet of newspaper and wad it up in the bottom. Put the charcoal in the top and your fire is good to go with one match. No lighter fluid needed.
