Thanks Tafoid. The DirectX SDK allowed it to enable it. Interestingly enough, running the line that you suggested enabled HLSL and I could see the effects, but slowed things down by about 25 percent...probably due to the graphics card. I think it's an ATI X1300. I only enable Triple Buffer and Refresh Speed in the .ini...everything else in terms of video settings is kept at default. I run a E6XXX C2D processor and it runs pretty much everything that I'm interested in just fine, except for the Blitz games. If I get a C2D E8500, maybe that would do it for that game.

MAME runs at 800x600...looks fine. Maybe HLSL is better for super high resolutions on LCD's. I'll keep playing around with it and see what I can come up with, but I'm certain I'll need a video card/processor upgrade to see any benefits.
