So the MameDevs changed Mame to implement code from others' work (the hard part of the project) rather than create the code from scratch. I can see now that this wasn't just a Mame requirement but a necessity for MESS. I would further a guess that C++ was chosen for cross platform compatibility?
Mame is to faithfully emulate the machine board of a game like Tekken, than to use a PSX port. Mr Belmont's explanation makes complete sense.
