The problem with leaving it in gear *only* is that it only takes a mis-placed foot or hand to take it out.... Sometimes the centering spring in the shifter will take it out, if there's not enough pull from the vehicle weight.
Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.
