It's not that the person was alone when they died, it's that not a single person noticed they suddenly weren't around anymore for more than a year. Maybe some people are comfortable with that kind of isolation, but they would be the exception rather than the rule. Most people in that situation would be horribly lonely, humans in general are social creatures by nature.
