Sad, but it seems to happen more often than you'd think. A story like this seems to pop up once or twice a year. One can only hope that you won't be that utterly alone at the end.
The saddest story like this that I've heard was Layne Staley from Alice in Chains. He was so isolated when he ODed that the only reason anyone came looking for him was his accountant noticed that he hadn't been spending any money.
