Even if you plan to watch the anime, you should start with Dragon Ball. It's a lot funnier (especially if you appreciate off-colour toilet and sex jokes), but more importantly, it's actually episodic - situations arise and are resolved within an episode or two. DBZ was really an exercise in how many episodes they could milk out of the source material.
How many Super Saiyan does it take to change a lightbulb? Only one, but it takes ten episodes!
