Letting the iron heat up is the best advice ever. It's so simple, but so important. When I first started soldering, I did a poor job because I didn't let the iron heat up, nor did I let the surfaces heat up. My introduction to soldering was when the hot water pipes in my house failed. I replaced them all via "lead free" solder. Took a few tries, but I eventually got it right. About 8 months later, I had to have my furnace replaced. The plumber guy came in, saw the work I did, and said "I don't remember coming out. Did you do this yourself? If so, I'd like to hire you as this is some of the best plumbing work I've ever seen." I was stunned. This guy has been doing plumbing for 45+ years, so when he said my soldering/plumbing work was good, it felt REALLY good.
Anyway, he looked over everything and my plumbing is great right now. Will see how time treats me.
