I have a little metal tin of some stuff that I can't recall the name of at the moment. It's hard and waxy.
Basically, you let your soldering iron heat up, then you quickly roll the tip in this stuff and then wipe it on your sponge or a damp cloth. I use a heavy cotton dishrag, lightly moistened. Anyway, this stuff has something in it, possibly a mild acid that cleans the tip and it also has some kind of metal powder, probably tin, that coats the hot tip.
When you're done, you have a shiny, clean, freshly-tinned soldering iron tip. It makes soldering a thousand times easier and it only takes a few seconds each time.
