I've been using Maxtor drives in my DVRs and PCs for years and have never had one fail. The couple of Seagate drives that I've had were a little on the noisy side but didn't fail. I've only returned 1 drive under warranty. It was a Western Digital that the bearings were going bad in. It had a terrible whine. The refurb that they sent me is in use right now in my daughter's PC. I've got three Samsungs in my PC now. All seem to be fine. All three are the same model. The first two were made in Korea. The last one I bought was made in China. I've read these have a higher failure rate but so far mine has been OK.
That said, I think all manufacturers have had their share of good and bad drives. Some last for a long time, some don't.
