Finally got a chance to double-check this. As it turns out, an experimental mame.ini with multithreading turned on had been left in place of the correct one.
Put everything back to normal. Doublechecked that multithreading is off; it is. Doublechecked status of -uifont; it's set to 'default'. I'm still getting the crash, but this time it's a straight segfault at startup with no output.
Happens every time without fail. Tried disabling artwork, using a default mame.ini, etc. and no luck.
