The work that was done was not so much AY related but more in line with advances in discrete sound emulation.
Now, I know you mean this message to sound thankful for all the work done but when I see terms such as "years of misery", it hurts. I wouldn't think that being able to play any game even if the sound were missing or not quite right qualifies that time spent as "misery". You always had the option of not to play it...

This is a subjective observation. The best way to back up your words is to provide to the MAME team a recording from an actual PCB - directly from the board itself. Speaking for myself, in the current release (0.141u2), Amidar sounds pretty good. In the past I had noticed volume issues, but I don't notice them so much currently.
