Actually I didn't want to distort any games; I just wanted to get rid of what I thought was excess border introduced by MAME. But I think that the problems really were in my code, and also in my misunderstanding of what game resolutions mean (e.g. Donkey Kong is listed as 224x256 but the actual pixels that it draws are not at that resolution), and also in my getting tricked by games like Marble Madness that does actually draw a border around itself which you can see when the marbles bounce around randomly during the title screen.
