are blu-ray burners the only option for 4GB+ optical backup discs?

cause the reviews are horror stories. it seems like there's not a really recommendable blu-ray burner.
i don't give a shit about blu-ray movies, i just need to burn data sets that are a pain in the ass to parse across 4GB dvds.
i learned everything i know from KC
