Never, ever install the shit CDs that your ISP sends to you. Basically, it just brands your browser with their stuff and adds extra crap to your computer that you don't need.
You should be able to connect your router directly to your cable/dsl modem and 99% of the time, it will just work without having to install anything. Occasionally, you need to go through your router setup wizard, but even that's not really needed except to set the router password. Pretty much everything else is auto-configuring.
You are using a router between your computer and your cable/dsl modem, aren't you? If not, I highly recommend it. It's just one more layer of protection between you and the Internet.
