>What did the sign say, out of curiosity?
I don't remember... maybe it said "Safe Zone", I forgot. I remember when I came across the sign, I was with Blackburn, and he said it was your making... we were close to the surface, came out at a cave overlooking the water where Blackburn built his airborne base, and we could see your cabin off to the left across the water. You could get there in easy order by going in from that cave, though. We went back into the cavern and promptly got hopelessly lost for a long long time trying to find our way back to my base through the cavern.
I started doing this...
My paths are marked by torches set upon a pile of gravel. Double torches were supposed to mean dead-ends... until Blackburn was verifying a "dead-end" and we found our way into the diamond cavern we both died in... so now double torches means "this way to diamonds and sudden death." Seriously, lots of unexplored areas still to go, but if you find a double torch.. you are close to a serious load. There are a few unexplored areas I blocked off two stacks high with gravel so we wouldn't get snuck up on from behind by a mob... so if you see two-stack gravel, that's an unexplored part of the cavern.
Who knew we all built our bases right on top of probably the best cavern system in the whole map?
My only saving grace in that death is this... after digging and striking the cavern, I stopped to build a chest to put my valuables into before going into the cavern. I speluk only with a sword, bow, arrows, torches and armor. While I lost a full suit of iron armor (24 iron worth), along with the recently collected diamonds and other gems, at least I didn't loose my main mining equipment (diamond pick, clock, compass, etc).
