A shot of the entrance from the rear. Looks narrow, must be the angle. This side of the wall will also be covered in OSB for added shear strength.
The header is doubled LVL. Unnecessary for a gable wall opening but I figured:
a) It's a long span, and a heavy door. Using 2x12s would probably be tempting fate. I usually lose that battle.
b) The most noticeable feature of a crap garage is a "sagging header". Right above "overloaded attic" sag. I didn't want either, so I over-built just about everything. It really isn't that much more of a cost to do things right. A few hundred bucks over the whole garage for materials at most.
The diagonals at each corner serve little structural importance, but I thought it looked nicer than the typical "box". Entryway is 14'x8', so it really won't hurt getting in/out of the garage at all. (not that cars will be in here often.)
