First try: site that tells my government is pronounced "goverment." Okaybye.
Second try: site that tells me sandwich is pronounced "sanwich." Okaybye.
Third try: several more sites, some notes on Italian, finally a consensus from a few sites, the letter combination "gn" was originally pronounced with both letters, but we've dropped the g sound over the last few centuries.
